Beyond conventional fire retardants with Ember Guard

Developed by our Chief Scientist Matthew Wheeler, a former wildland firefighter who witnessed fire's devastating effects firsthand, Ember Guard represents a fundamental advancement in wood protection technology. While conventional treatments permit dangerous levels of smoke development (SDI up to 450) while still achieving Class A ratings, Ember Guard achieves a Smoke Developed Index of zero—addressing the primary cause of fire-related fatalities.

Complete system performance

Ember Guard forms the foundation of our fire protection system, which can be completed with our LSS (smooth surfaces) or LS PRO (rough surfaces) finishes. This system approach delivers comprehensive protection including:
  • Class A fire rating with zero smoke development
  • Superior UV protection and color stability
  • Enhanced dimensional stability and moisture resistance
  • Non-toxic, water-cleanup formulation with zero VOCs
  • Permanent internal protection requiring no reapplication
When independently tested by QAI Laboratories in 2025, Ember Guard demonstrated unique catalytic behavior under heat exposure, forming a progressively stronger internal barrier as temperature increases. This self-reinforcing protection makes it increasingly difficult for fire to spread, potentially giving occupants critical additional time for evacuation during a fire event.

Architect resources

As wood construction gains momentum in commercial and residential markets, fire safety remains the paramount concern for architects, engineers, and building officials.

Ember Guard fire-retardant coating provides advanced protection specifically engineered for today's wood construction methods and materials.

Performance advantages

Deep penetration technology
Ember Guard penetrates deep into wood fibers, creating an internal fire-retardant matrix rather than just a surface coating. This ensures protection even if the surface is damaged or weathered.
Weather-Resistant Formula
Engineered to withstand commercial building environments including UV exposure, temperature cycling, and moisture exposure without losing fire-retardant effectiveness.
Code Compliance Support
Formulated to help meet building code requirements for fire-retardant wood in commercial construction, with third-party testing documentation available for specification.
Perfect for architectural wood
Comprehensive protection for wood cladding on steel and concrete structures. Fire-retardant coating for architectural wood details and features. Code-compliant protection for exposed wood framing elements. Critical protection where different building materials meet

Protecting critical structures

TimberPro's fire retardant system is engineered specifically for the demands of commercial and institutional projects where both performance and aesthetics are non-negotiable:
Mass Timber buildings
Our system protects Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), Glulam beams, Mass Plywood Panels, and other engineered wood products while enhancing their natural beauty.
Public and institutional spaces
From airport terminals to university buildings, our fire retardant system helps create safer environments without sacrificing the biophilic benefits of exposed wood.
Interior and exterior features
Create dramatic wood feature walls, ceilings, and architectural details that maintain code compliance while serving as design focal points.
